Road Trippin'

10 (and a half) TIPS FOR ROAD TRIPS

So many people fly everywhere these days that you might think the classic American road trip is a thing of the past. This is not actually the case. While it does seem that the On the Road experience of getting a car and just going for the sake of going is in decline, the statistics (and the number of cars all around you) prove that more Americans than ever are taking to the roads for vacations and family visits, albeit apparently for more frequent but shorter trips. And frankly, with airline customer service unquestionably in decline, many Americans would rather drive than fly.

Stats aside, there is no denying that the lure of the road is undeniable and probably eternal; it almost seems embedded in our very makeup. There is a richness to traversing the land an inch at a time that is absent from the experience of climbing into a metal canister and climbing out at your destination. To get the most of your experience, don’t miss these road trip tips.

For many this summer, flying to a destination vacation is likely off the table thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  Analysts have warned that air travel demand won't go back to pre-outbreak levels until at least midway through next year. Instead, a recent survey conducted by the US Travel Association and MMGY Travel Intelligence found that 67% of travelers are likely to travel with their personal cars during the next six months — which is "more than double the percentage planning to travel by air during the same time period."

So, that means a return to the all-American road trip.

East to Death Valley & Joshua Tree

If you’ve had enough of beaches and big city life, it’s time to hit the national parks! Winter is one of the best times of the year to visit Death Valley (about a 5-hour drive from LA), as it’s unbearably hot there in the summer. Alternatively, if you’re in the mood to literally disappear and get away from people (not to mention a great way to get nude in nature), Joshua Tree is just 2.5 hours from LA, has fewer crowds before springtime, and wildflower viewing as early as February. Swing by Palm Springs nearby to come back tan from your trip and make everyone at home in the cold jealous!

Escape Tip: Fill up your gas tank before you head into Death Valley. It’s a long way between filling stations out there.

In 2017, National Geographic photographer Jonathan Irish and his travel partner Stefanie undertook an epic road trip to visit all 59 U.S. National Parks in one year. They did it all with an Airstream travel trailer named Wally in tow.

At every stop on their route, Jonathan and Stefanie set out to discover the best of what each park has to offer. Hitting all 59 parks in 52 weeks was a challenge, but the duo pulled it off.  And it’s all documented on their website, The Greatest American Road Trip: 59 Parks in 52 Weeks. The site is packed full of in-depth reports on each park visit, special behind-the-scenes details about the trip, and more.

Mention the word “paddle” to most people and you may get references to “being up the creek without one,” the movie Deliverance, or corporal punishment handed out at Catholic schools in  their childhood.  But when I hear the word “paddle,” it immediately conjures up indelible images from my favorite canoe trips around the world.  It brings up warm memories of mist coming off the shore at dawn. The calls of a loon or howler monkey reverberating throughout the surrounding wilderness. The only human-made sound the “swish-plop” of a paddle as you propel your canoe (or kayak) along the river or across the lake.

It was paddling that introduced me to my first real travel adventure several decades ago in Ontario’s Haliburton Highlands. And, truth be told, I’ve been totally hooked on the hobby ever since.  These are my personal picks for the 10 Best Canoe Trips in the World, and I feel like I’ve barely touched the tip of the iceberg…

I love places where you can easily get around using solely public transportation, but unfortunately Norway isn’t really one of those places. I mean, if you stick to the cities then public transport will be fine, but if you want to venture into the countryside? You’ll need to rent a car for that in Norway.

Luckily driving in Norway is an amazing experience – in fact I tell everyone who visits that they have to consider a road trip when planning a trip to Norway!  Plus, public transport can also be really expensive in Norway, so if you’re traveling with other people and want to see as much of Norway as possible, you’re definitely best off renting a car here.

Plus road trips are so much fun!

Get some red dirt on your tires and some bugs on your windscreen, test friendships, play eye-spy, spot wildlife, push your stomach to the limit on roadhouse food, sing-along to sweet tunes and let beautiful landscapes unfurl in front of you.

Pack the car, grab a mate and head for the open road. Here are some crackin’ Australian road trips that are all about the journey and not the destination.

When Rich Ligato saw an advertisement promoting the California Lottery jackpot of $14 million one morning while he was commuting to work in San Diego, one question nagged him all day: “What would I do if money was no object ?”.  When he asked his wife, Amanda, later that day her answer was the same as his: travel the world.

In their case the itch to scratch the travel bug was so strong that they spent six years scrimping and saving to raise the $50,000 needed to buy a 1978 VW Westfalia camper van and take it 60,000 miles across the Americas and Africa over three years. While some items they took with them didn’t last the course, their faithful VW van passed with flying colors.  Here is their story:
